Eravikulam National Park: A Treasure Trove of Attractions!

Occupying an important place on the tourist map of Kerala, Eravikulam National Park is a must-see destination for wildlife lovers. The park’s most famous attraction is its endangered Nilgiri Tahr (a mountain goat). The park’s scenic landscape coupled with a variety of wildlife make it a big hit with tourists. Located in the wonderful district of Idukki, the Park is being considered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1978.

Spreading over an area of ​​97 square kilometers, the Eravikulam National Park has a vegetation consisting of high-altitude grasslands interspersed with Sholas.

The park is home to the largest population of Nilgiri Tahr in the world. Apart from this, the other wildlife species found here are Elephants, Sambar Deer. Golden jackal, jungle cat, wild dog, dhole, Nilgiri leopard langur, Nilgiri marten, small-clawed otter, tiger, leopard, Nilgiri wood pigeon, grinning thrush from Kerala and the short wing with a white belly. The Park provides shelter to around 26 species of mammals, 132 species of birds, 101 species of butterflies and 19 species of amphibians. Tourists can also see a variety of orchids here. According to reports, around 20 species of orchids are found in the Park.

You can also spot wonderful and colorful birds like the Black and Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Yellow Throated Marten, White-bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Verditer Flycatcher and Kerala Laughing Thrush.

Atlas Moth, the largest moth in the world is found in this park. You can also hike to Anamudi Peak located within the Park. It is the highest peak in South India, offering stunning views of the surrounding area.
