The new Sony VAIO laptop, with its impressive functions and charismatic features, have helped the model to invade the minds of the users. VAIO, short for Video Audio Integrated Operation, is a sub-brand of Sony, the electronics giant. Sony made the mark to distinguish items that encompassed consumer audio and video use, as well as being mainstream computer products. Sony was a big name in the Japanese computer market in the 1980s, but left the field at the end of the decade. Its re-entry into the computer market, this time worldwide, was in 1996 under a new VAIO brand with the PCV series of desktop computers. The VAIO logo of the brand that became a great success represents the integration of analog and digital technology. The ‘VA’ represents an analog waveform and the ‘IO’ represents a digital binary code.

Sony plans to expand the use of the VAIO label. Its new products include notebooks, subnotebooks, desktop computers and a hard drive-based audio player that comes in 20GB and 40GB variations. Sony’s networked multimedia solutions will also carry the VAIO brand. High-end Sony VAIO laptops typically ship with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Business, while lower-end laptops such as the N-series ship with Microsoft Vista Home Basic. VAIO computers come with Intel processor components, Seagate technology or Fujitsu hard drives, and Sony speakers.

Recent Sony VAIO models such as the TX or SZ have implemented the XBRITE LCD display with LED backlight, which further enhances the LCD unit’s power saving and accurate color reproduction capabilities. The VAIO SZ series features an Intel GMA950 graphics chip and an NVIDIA graphics chip. The high-end AR series VAIOs were the first models to feature a Blu-ray disc recorder. These laptops were designed to be the epitome of high-definition products, including a 1080p-compatible WUXGA (1920 × 1200 pixels) display, HDMI output, and the aforementioned Blu-ray burner. The AR series also includes an illuminated logo under the screen.
