Curriculum Issues and Trends: From Technology to Global Awareness

Many immediate and complex problems overwhelm today’s educators. With global positive and negative influences, educators must look beyond the surface of education. Students are not just products of their schools, but will become the shaping forces of society, determining the success and failure of their nation’s future. Curriculars, educators, and all leaders must work together to develop a comprehensive curriculum, which includes learning from different cultures. Our next generation will have to grapple with cross-cultural issues and become sensitive adults who are fair and equitable to global society.

Technology plays an essential role in our education today and will be even more so in the future. Especially in countries where economic and political situations are stable, accessibility to the Internet and computers to maximize the curriculum and act as a means of communication between educators, even to the extent of intranets, must be available. This technology should be available in all schools funded by taxes and grants from private industry.

Technology can also bridge the gaps between educational levels around the world. Due to political and socio-economic differences between countries, it would be impossible for this degree of technology to reach all parts of the world; however, an effort must be made to ensure that education is distributed to all children everywhere. This will require volunteers, donations and assistance from internationally capable countries. Even if there was only one computer in each city for those countries for school-age children, it would make a difference.

Another reason technology is important to the development of our curriculum is for the expansion of cultural knowledge. The need to understand different cultures is an emerging theme in education and societies today as relations between countries become more intertwined. The United States has always been a country of diversity; however, for a long time, the content of its curriculum was selectively focused on the west.

For example, high school world history courses primarily emphasized European and Western history. Now we can make use of technology to design a world history curriculum that includes not only that part of world history, but extends beyond that. The University of San Diego, in cooperation with the National Center for History in the Schools of the University of Los Angeles, offers information on the Internet about world history and helps teachers to teach a complete curriculum without excluding an important part of the people, events or schedules of the world. We must also take advantage of technology to form a curriculum to create international awareness, understand various cultures, and learn different opinions and values. Curriculum
You need to focus on breaking down barriers against other people who are different and fostering mutual respect and understanding of other cultures and beliefs. One way to promote cultural exchange is through technological communication. Thanks to the advancement of today’s technology, students around the world can use computers to see and talk to each other. The government, various organizations and individuals with the means to do so should encourage and help make more efforts to promote such communication. One day, thanks to the help of technology in education, people will learn that we are all part of the world community.
